There can be no more beautiful view of the forests and peaks of the Bavarian Forest than from the top of the Great Falkenstein. Guide Frank Hanus takes guests on a varied walk to the Falkenstein through the ancient forest areas of Mittelsteighütte and Höllbachgspreng.
Starting point for the walk is the Info-Pavillion at the Southern end of the village of Zwieselerwaldhaus. The short walk through the village leads to the oldest inn in the Bavarian Forest, the Zwieseler Waldhaus. Then the walk continues, following the green signs for the E 6 path, past the village to the East into the Steinbachtal.
Ascent to the Great FalkensteinThe walk passes through idyllic mixed beech woods of the
Bavarian Forest National Park, on the Lackenbergsteig and the Jägersteig. After 4 kilometres and a climb of 500 metres, the Ruckowitzschachten (a former summer pasture) provides a wonderful view of the
Great Arber. From this point, walkers only need to climb another 100 metres and cross the peak of the Ruckwies.
At the highest point of the walk, there is a breathtaking view from the plateau at the top of the mountain, towards the West and South West, to the Great Arber and the mountains of the lower Bavarian Forest.
For anyone who wants to stay longer, the Schutzhaus at the Great Falkenstein offers refreshments and overnight stays during the summer season.
Return to ZwieselerwaldhausOn the return, the path goes to the East of the Great Falkenstein, also on the E 6, along the Hüttensteig. Then along the Höllbachriegel in the direction of Höllbachgspreng. Steep rock formations as tall as houses as well as waterfalls are the main features of the landscape here. The Höllbach cascades in waterfalls into the valley and flows in various streams into the next point on the walk, the Höllbachschwelle.
Following the "Blueberry" path signs, the walk continues along the Schwellensteig and finally on the Schillerweg along the Schwarzbach-, Ahorn-, and Hochschachtenriegel back to Zwieselerwaldhaus.
