Since 2007 the Goldsteig in the Bavarian Forest has been rated as a "Quality Walk in Germany". It runs from Marktredwitz to Passau, through the Oberpfalz and Bavarian Forests for approximately 660 kilometres in 3 sections – making it the longest rated walk in Germany.
The Goldsteig quality walk fulfills the criteria with respect to configuration of the path, natural attractiveness, cultural landmarks and signage. It is also one of the "Top Trails of Germany", as one of the best and most beautiful long distance footpaths in Germany.
Thousand metre mountains on the Northern section, rolling hills in the SouthOn the edge of the Oberpfalz Forest, the Goldsteig divides into the North and South routes.
The South Route runs from the fork at the Prackendorf Moor near Thanstein for 240 kilometres over the delightful rolling hills of the lower Bavarian Forest to Passau.
The Northern Route runs for 420 kilometres along the Bohemian border from Marktredwitz to Passau stringing together the impressive 1,000 metre high mountains (interner Link zu 1_0_Tausender Berge) of ArberLand.
Patron of this excellent long distance path is the cheesemaking company Goldsteig, based in Cham. Goldsteig is a cooperative of more than 5,000 dairy farmers and the largest mozzarella producer in Germany.
