Scimitars on the Pandurs Way
The Pandurs Way is in memory of the invasion of the Bavarian Forest by the Pandur Corps in 1742. Today the scimitar is the symbol of the historic route through the lower mountains of ArberLand.
More than 250 years after the barbaric invasion by Trenck’s Pandurs, the Pandurs Way is one of the most delightful walks in Germany. It links 2 popular routes in ArberLand: the den Pfahl Path and the Ilztal Path.
Devil’s Wall, Großer Pfahl and Weißenstein Castle
On the Pfahl Path between Thierlstein and Weißenstein, the Pfahl, a 150 kilometre long vein of quarz, breaks impressively through the earth in many places: the "Devil’s Wall" at Cham, the nature protection areas "Großer Pfahl" near Viechtach or the ruined castle of Weißenstein built on Pfahl rocks.
Continuing across the foothills of the Bavarian Forest National Park, the Pandurs Way reaches the river Ilz, which takes the walker through the ruggedly picturesque river valley to Passau.

- Day 1: Waldmünchen – Cham, 23 kilometres, approx. 6 hours
- Day 2: Cham – Prackenbach, 32 kilometres, approx. 8 hours (to Pfahlhof 23 kilometres, approx. 5 hours)
- Day 3: Prackenbach – Patersdorf, 18 kilometres, approx. 4 hours (from Pfahlhof 27 kilometres, approx. 7 hours)
- Day 4: Patersdorf – Rinchnach, 24 kilometres, approx. 6 hours
- Day 5: Rinchnach – Spiegelau, 17 kilometres, approx. 4 hours
- Day 6: Spiegelau – Perlesreut, 26 kilometres, approx. 6 hours (to Haus i. Wald 22 kilometres, approx. 5 hours)
- Day 7: Perlesreut – Fürsteneck, 15 kilometres, approx. 3 hours (from Haus i. Wald 16 kilometres, approx. 4 hours)
- Day 8: Fürsteneck – Hals/Passau, 19 kilometres, approx. 4 hours
The walk can be done with or without carrying luggage.
