The Bohemian Way: From the Danube to the Vltava

 

On the trail of the Celts. the Bohemian Way in ArberLand, alongside the Bavarian Way and Golden Way, is one of the oldest links between the Danube and the Vltava. The well worn path crosses the "Nortwald", from Deggendorf to Bayerisch Eisenstein.

In 4 short daily stages it is possible to follow in the steps of traders and travellers, on mostly wide and comfortable paths, from the Danube Valley over the mountains of the Bavarian Forest, into Bohemia:

  • Day 1: Deggendorf – Bischofsmais, 17 kilometres, approx. 4 hours
  • Day 2: Bischofsmais – Weißenstein, 7 kilometres, approx. 2 hours
  • Day 3: Weißenstein – Zwiesel, 12 kilometres, approx. 3 hours
  • Day 4: Zwiesel – Bayerisch Eisenstein, 16 kilometres, approx. 5 hours


An Easy Hike for Families and Unhurried Walkers
With the short distances and easy paths, this route is ideal for families and casual walkers. On the way there is always plenty of time to stop and enjoy the many villages and places of interest, such as the ruined castle at Weißenstein or the glassworks in Zwiesel.

The Varied History of the Bohemian Way
When the path was paved with granite slabs in the 18th century, it became possible to use wagons on it. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Rusel road was built and the Bohemian Way lost its importance until it was rediscovered as a walking route.

Waking without Luggage
Guided walks on the Bohemian Way, with no worries about the transportation of luggage, take place in Spring and Autumn. The Tourist Info in Bischofsmais has the exact dates. The start date is always a Saturday.
