The Main Southern Route in the Bavarian Forest

Arberblick vom Ruckowitzschachten
Whereas the main northern route through the Bavarian Forest captivates with its ruggedness, the main southern route is more gently picturesque.

The main southern route stretches for 170 kilometres along the Danube ridge, across the border at Kappel/Oberkappel into Upper Austria. The walking is a little easier compared with the northern route but has the backdrop of the impressive border mountains.

The southern route follows the Pfahl (a vein of quarz which periodically breaks through the surface of the earth) and guides the walker through the varied landscape of the lower Bavarian Forest. It is part of the Eastern Main-Danube-Path from Ochsenkopf to Passau.

The symbol for the route (green triangle) is consistent along the whole of the route.
